Fun at Mookee’s Expense
This is in answer to Mookee’s post about skiing this past weekend. We went up for a day trip with my friend and neighbor, Shawn, to Sugar Bowl. Shawn is new to snowboarding so I spent the first part of the day with him, teaching him the basics. Then in the afternoon Mookee and I hit some of the more difficult slopes. Since he called me out in his post to give my perspective on his two stories, here they are. Make sure to read his (link above) first, and then come back here.
STORY ONE
Mookee and I decided to take a break and were heading down a particularly steep -but not carved up- slope to head a little lodge by the lifts we were using. I got to the bottom and looked back to see him cutting back and forth, quickly but in control. So I stopped worrying about him and rode in to the lodge. I started to undo my bindings when I heard everyone go, “Oh!” I looked up to see everyone, and this is several dozen people, looking back the way I came from.
Over my shoulder I saw Mookee on his belly, one foot in the air and his face in the snow. “Are you alright?” I yelled at him. No response and no movement. Shit. I ripped off my second binding, grabbed my board and started hauling ass up to where his prone figure is lay. “Hey! Are you alright?” I began to wonder if I should find someone on the ski patrol.
Finally his head comes up and laughing. As we walked back to the lodge to face all those people I thought, This will be his walk of shame. I was wrong.
STORY TWO
After several runs on blue, even though they were fun and fast (I love speed!) I thought I would challenge us with something more difficult. I’m not interested in going down between the rocks and boulders, but I did lead Mookee next to the rocks and boulders to a spot where the slope curved down and looked more like a cliff than something safe.
“Do you want to do this?” I asked.
“Do I want to do this or will I do it, do you mean?”
“Yes.”
After some discussion I went first. Damn the slope was steep! Steep enough that instead of falling I could just put my arm out to keep myself upright. Which didn’t stop me from sliding down the hill a bit on my butt at one point. Finally I got to the spot we agreed I would wait for Mookee so he could begin his run.
At first he was doing quite well. Then, for just a second, I was distracted. When I looked up again his arms were flailing and then he went over. He slid. And slid. He tried digging his ski-less feet into the slope to slow down. That didn’t work. Hands gouging trails of snow… That didn’t work either. I have not laughed that hard in a long time.

Mookee Hates LifeHaving lost both skis up a very steep slope requires serious hiking. Fifty feet up the hill he got to the first ski. I swear I could hear him gasping for breath. Uphill a woman and her little girl saw the situation and went to go get his other ski. Mookee was helped. By a little girl. This was Mookee’s walk of shame… Because the little girl then gracefully skied past him, as did her Mom.
Finally Mookee got both skis on. I was still laughing. “Hey, funny guy!” he yelled. Somehow he managed to make it down the rest of the way, but I was really hoping he’d wipe out again and have to repeat his little walk of shame. For the rest of the day I got a good chuckle out of watching him wipe out…

1. It was a little BOY!!! damn you.
2. Your picture is a bit off. I’m thinking another thirty degrees … we’ve had this discussion, this picture turns my walk of shame to a walk of utter humiliation … ass

Does it really matter if it was a boy or a girl?

Actually, it does in a certain macho kind of way. It’s more emasculating for Mookee if it was a girl.
And she was a girl!
