Battlestar Galactica: Razor
On November 24th, just a short ways away, SciFi Channel will be premiering Battlestar Galactica: Razor, a two hour movie that tells the story of the Battlestar Pegasus and her crew. This has been expected to be filler to tide everyone over until Season Four, the final season of the show, gets underway sometime in 2008.
However tonight I just got back from a movie theater showing of Razor with Banana Boy and let me tell you, it kicked some serious butt. Spoilers follow so stop now if you aren’t into it; just be satisfied that you will really enjoy the show!
I really don’t want to give too much away because I do want it to be a surprise for you but… I can’t really help it! Admiral Cain, who I never liked, gains a heart. It was a bit of a surprise. And who knew she was a lesbian? I didn’t, though somehow I’m not surprised. Kendra, a new character who is not the love interest, is also a subtly powerful study in how acting like a machine can destroy your humanity. I liked her a lot.
We were promised that this would set up a few things for Season Four and Razor delivered. If you’ve been watching the webisodes leading up to Razor then you know that Adama, as a young pilot, discovers Cylon experiments on humans in their attempt at “evolution”. Razor reveals an early success with their experiments: a weird old guy who reveals something about Kara. Something… important. It will affect the rest of Battlestar Galactica and I’m gonna leave you guessing!
One of my favourite bits was seeing the original Cylon Centurians and hearing them say, for I believe the first time in the re-imaged show, “By your command.” I actually whooped out loud!
I only have a few minor gripes, and they are technical and not really relevant to the show. The first is I really wish they could have introduced the knife (a constant prop throughout Razor) somewhere in the regular season. It’s fine they didn’t, but would have integrated things. I realize it’s a bit late for that now that the story arc they should have done this in is done and over. The second is that during one space battle scene (which were amazing as usual) two Cylon Raiders crash into Pegasus causing hull breaches. I’m sorry, but we’ve seen both Pegasus and Galactica take direct nuclear weapons strikes and they never cried about hull breaches. Hello!
Razor was great, and seeing it on the big screen was amazing. It would have been nice not to see the ads before hand (it was, after all, a sponsored event) but they weren’t too bad. When it shows in the 24th be sure to watch Razor! If you miss it, though, don’t cry; it will be released in an extended and unrated version on December 4th on DVD. I’ve already ordered my copy.
