It Is Far Less Clear…
![]()
The BraceletBack in college I used to work at the Front Room Campus Coffee Shop (now gone and replaced) with gTodd to earn money and force myself to wake up in mornings so I wouldn’t miss classes. It was that “psychology” thing where I wouldn’t get up for class but I would get up to pour Ethiopian Yrgacheffe for grumpy professors and hung over students.
I have many fond memories of the Front Room. I used to play open mic nights there, play ERS, studied, wrote, collected AE flyers, and met all sorts of interesting people.
Of course there was a lost and found, and one of the more curious items we found left behind was the bracelet pictured above. It says, “It is far less clear what lovers do,” and is obviously hand engraved. We held onto it for some time and finally I claimed it as my own. I wore it around the back of my hand rather than around my wrist which was far more comfortable than you’d think. It stayed on my left hand for many years.
I never learned who made it, or where the quote was from, but I still have it and pull it out occasionally. It holds a lot of nostalgia now as I wore it at a point where I was rather gothy and punkish. As Mookee once wrote:
But now those days have past
Should have known they’d not last
But I still think about those fine daysAnd somehow it seems
They were only in my dreams
But the memories are as real as today

Hey, I remember going to the Front Room a couple of times when I would visit OU several weekends each year. I remember playing ERS (but you called it Rat Fuck back then)at some Chinese restaurant one night.
Anyway, I often look back on my visits to OU with great fondness.

Yeah, I think we really confused the family that ran the restaurant when we played. They could never figure out what was going on. I still call it Rat Fuck, but when I wrote the linked article I thought I’d call it by the more family-friendly Egyptian Rattle Screw. Of course I have no idea how it got that name, either, and it sounds naughty enough on it’s own.

This may only be on IE6, but that pic of the bracelet is weirdly positioning to near the top of the page, well away from the post. I wouldn’t have noticed it at all if you didn’t specifically cite it.
Ah, if only my college days and blogging days had occurred closer to one another. I’d have loads of campus watering hole/found items post material. As it is, a detailed online recounting of those old days now seems horribly misguided; and besides, they’re slowly but surely starting to evacuate my memory cells (for better or worse).

Yeah, there is definitely something screwed up with my site coding. It didn’t manifest until I updated to WordPress 2.1. I think there’s something weird with it’s image handling. It’s rather pissing me off in that respect. There are a couple tweaks it’s made that are not really welcome from my POV…
Many of my college memories are evaporating as well. I keep a private journal where I’ve tried to recount many of the stories that were of note, though. Nothing wrong with dredging up a few for a good post, though. :)
