The New “Me” Generation
It’s becoming more clear to me that the new “me” generation are the conservatives and those Republicans who manipulate them. Why? Because everything they do they do for themselves.
Religious Freedom: my religion. Christianity, specifically fundies. Too bad if you’re not. Also remember that they get to proselytize to you whether you like it or not.
Economic Freedom: my money. Lower taxes at the expense of social programs. More credit debt because there’s no fiscal responsibility. The world is a resource to be used to make money, nothing more. In fact, often there are financial incentives for destroying the environment instead of saving it.
Political Freedom: my government. The idea that “I” am always better than the government. Helping lobbiests at the expense of the public good. For that matter pushing personal agendas at the expense of the public good.
Social Freedom: my way or no way. Not the minorities, the homosexuals, or anyone who’s different. More money for “faith based initiatives” but less for social justice programs.
So much that the conservative leadership does trickles down into every day lives. After all, if they can’t balance the federal budget and they say that’s alright, why should we as citizens care if we are financially responsible? If the President gets to illegally record phone conversations then why should we bother to act morally ourselves? If it’s not important to help the thousands of displaced refugees from hurricane Katrina, why should we care if we help our neighbor?
I’ve got loads more to say on the subject, but I’ll stop for now so I can think more about the new “me” (or perhaps “selfish”) generation.
