Frustrated at Work

Generally it has been my policy to not talk too negatively about work. However there are things happening that I think most IT professionals will identify with. This is written for them.

We are understaffed. We have been for months. We would normally be able to keep up but we’ve also been hit by Murphey’s Law: that which can go wrong will go wrong. It started with our email server taking a nose dive into a pool with no water. The replacement server inexplicably malfunctioned. The replacement replacement server decided it, too, wouldn’t cooperate.

Then our DNS server died for no reason. Not to be one upped by the DNS server our email server’s hard drive died. Pop a cap in me now, it will hurt less.

So while we’re running around trying to deal with all of this (and the nasty PR surrounding it) other things are slowing deteriorating. The file server is a constant headache. The FTP server likes to delete accounts. For no reason. Our password authentication system decides it needs a vacation. Some databases are set up which we aren’t even involved with. 150 users all have individual issues.

Did I mention we’re understaffed and under-budgeted?

Despite everything we haven’t gone on strike. We have’t quit and we have put up with much misunderstanding (bordering on abuse). We’re still doing the best we can with what we have. Sometimes we’re even good natured. Sometimes other people are, too.

It’s a thankless job yet here I am, plugging away at it with my colleagues. It won’t be like this all the time, but for my department 2006 is turning into the year of shit. I think I need to get some sleep. Good night.
