Ultraviolet: Words Escape Me

Ultraviolet - The Movie
Milla Jovovich in Ultraviolet
I’m just back from seeing Ultraviolet starring Milla Jovovich. I went with Mr. Defiant who I know has loads to say about this movie but I can’t wait for him to write a review because I’m impatient (actually I just found out he’s writing one right now so I’ll post his link when he’s got one). Caveats to this review: I’m a big fan of Milla’s, but I go to any movie expecting the worst so I’m rarely disappointed.

The premise behind Ultraviolet is simple. A disease causes hemophages (AKA vampires) to be created but a totalitarian medical community is stomping them out. Violet (Milla) is a hemophage fighting for her very survival and discovers the human’s ultimate killing device: a boy with something in him. Will she kill the boy or protect him? Her decisions will save the world and… herself.

I’m going to send that to Sony Pictures to put on the back of the DVD when they release it next month, because that’s about when I’d expect to see it on the shelves.

This movie is bad. In fact it’s so very bad that I actually like it. As Jon E. pointed out, we’re seeing the beginning of an absolute cult classic, a midnight movie for the nerd-fests held around the world. The only thing this movie is missing is a song and dance routine and it could give Rocky Horror Picture Show a run for its money.

I should have known early in the movie that it was going to be cheese when a computer voice instructed Violet to remove her clothing. I should have known…

Ultraviolet, on a whole, took itself too seriously. The acting is actually quite good, but the directing and editing as well as the general story was disjointed and poorly executed. There was so much action and motion that I could barely understand what was going on half the time. Milla and Cameron Bright who played the boy gave solid performances, but Kurt Wimmer couldn’t direct the movie in a less coherent way. It’s a shame really, because I thought he did a really good job with Equilibrium.

Despite the badness of the movie, though, I loved it. I thought the movie was going to end about halfway through and they kept it going. I thought some of the dialogue couldn’t get worse, but it did. I never thought I would laugh out loud at a serious movie, but I did. I can’t wait to see this movie again. I know I’ll be seeing it for all the wrong reasons, but it feels just so-o right.

I highly recommend seeing it yourself. For further corroboration see Mr. Defiant’s review. See you there!
