Blogging Systems and the Future
As most people who know me know, I use Blosxom to run this site and quite a few others, including The Unofficial Blosxom Users Group (which I should really change to the “Unofficial Blosxom User” since no one else has stepped up to the plate to help with it).
Anyways, lately I’ve been thinking I should really learn at least one other blogging system. Most of them use PHP and MySQL, and I don’t know either. If someone were to ask me to set up a blog for them with something besides Blosxom I would be seriously hindered. One of my many goals for this year is to set up a new blog, and I’ve decided to do this with a system besides Blosxom as a learning experience.
After a lot of research I finally narrowed the list down to two systems. Drupal is much more than a blogging system; it’s more of a full blown CMS (content management system). The other system I’ve been really looking at is WordPress. It seems to have a similar spirit as Blosxom and, unlike Drupal, it is designed to be blogging software from the get go. It also seems like they’ve developed various methods of dealing with comment spam that are reasonably effective, which is key.
Eventually I will get it installed and see what I can do with WordPress. I’m not abandoning Blosxom by any stretch of the imagination. In fact it might be nice to pull some ideas from these other systems into Blosxom usage. Maybe in the future I can make two blogging systems work together in tandem to create even more dynamic input on a page… Hmmm, in fact I could probably do that now with Blosxom. Another project for another day!

go with WordPress
If CMS is really what you’re interested in (and it doesn’t sound that way, from the way you wrote this post), then Drupal may be a good choice — I really don’t know. When I hear people talk about ‘the best’ CMS solution, Zope is usually the subject. Again, I don’t know. I tend to roll my own. :)
I have no intention of moving beyond Blosxom either, but if I were to start blogging for the first time today, I’d probably have picked WordPress.- Mookee says (February 7th, 2005 at 02:15:38 )
How about a site that randomly puts explosions and neaked women on your screen?
Not necessarily all the time, but just randomly when you’re leasts expecting it, a giant explosion. You don’t lose anything, it’s just a momentary distraction. Do they make such things?
And how do I get a map that shows who and where are people in the world looking at mookee? Yes, I realize that I’d have a little mini dot where I live, but maybe if I saw one little red dot, I’d try to get more dots.
Maybe not, but one never knows.

No pictures of me?
No nudity?
No random explosions? Is this going to get any better, or will it always be stupid?

it looks like wordpress would be the saner choice of those two. otherwise, i think we’ll have a bit of a wait for the mookee system to be put out.

WordPress it is
I’m experimenting with WordPress right now. It seems like a decent system, though I’m having some problems with a few of the configurations saving correctly and had problems initially getting MySQL on MacOS X Server and WordPress to play well together. Hopefully I’ll have a new blog launch in the near future to announce.Mookee: no, no nudity or explosions on this site. I’ll see what I can do about getting at least one picture up for you, though. It will be fun pasting your head onto a naked woman’s body and blowing it up…

Unofficial Blosxom Users Group (UBUG) A Good Thing
I want to chime in on the UBUG — keep the good times rolling, it’s been a valuable resource for me. I typically start looking at blosxom.com, then depending on the direction my search takes I’ll end up at either the UBUG or the Yahoo Blosxom Group. Maybe we just need to make the connections or purposes of the various sites more obvious? Or maybe it’s fine as is. In either case, just wanted you to know your effort is appreciated! –Mike- dugh says (February 9th, 2005 at 12:39:20 )
Thanks!
I appreciate the kind words and believe me, there’s no way I’m giving up on Blosxom. I’ve got my head wrapped around how to use it and am still learning more. If I could take the time to learn Perl I’d be doing even more with it!
