[...] Almost exactly a year ago I was visited by the ever dangerous Curse of the iBook which, translated, means a faulty logic board for which there was a recall. Last night my computer froze up cold on me before going out to a movie. I thought it was strange, but restarted and everything worked fine for the rest of the night. [...]

update
i managed to get it to boot up and i backed up everything to an external hard drive. then i called apple. the woman there was very helpful but i was suprised to hear their first step in troubleshooting this is to reset the PMU. that being said things appear to be working, at least for now. even so, i guess it's time to start making regular back ups... i've been spoiled in recent years by apple's reliablility.

further update
yesterday we reset the PMU and my laptop worked for the rest of the day. i put it to sleep at the end of the work day, went home, tried to wake it up and it wouldn't wake up. resetting the PMU didn't help, and neither did connecting and external monitor.
this morning it booted fine, but crapped out eventually. apple is going to fix it.

i have to say i was impressed with apple's customer support. the phone system was easy enough to navigate and the two women i talked with (ann yesterday and joan today) knew what they were about. best of all joan predicted they should have my laptop back in less than two weeks which is great news to me. at least i got everything i needed off of there...
