Nushu: Women’s Language

I learned about an interesting language today spoken only by women in the Yao ethinic group in China. They have thier own distinctive language and writing system. It looks quite interesting and the idea of a gender based language could be interesting for some of the earlier languages.

I meant to mention this last week, but several of the Native American cultures often have male and female dialects. Lakota Sioux for one. From what I understand, Kevin Costner spoke the female version in “dances with wolves” which was kind of their little joke on him. But for more easily found references to women/men languages you should check out the locals as several universities have great big Native American dialect studies divisions of their anthro departments including UNM and Arizona State.
