Daft Punk. Discovery.

retro 70s sound. funk/disco grooves. was afraid of it at first, but am appreciating it now. a few of the songs get repetative (superheroes is one track that drives me nuts), but most are really good. one of my favorites is aerodynamic.

Cowboy Bebop, Original Soundtracks.

the music from Cowboy Bebop is awesome. not only did these folks come up with a great anime series, they also put together one of the finest soundtracks i’ve heard in years. guided by the great yoko kanno, it is filled with jazz played by the seatbelts, slide guitar and harmonica, electronic sounds, and a variety of other styles. great stuff that even after a year of listening i’m not tired of… i’m hoping to pick up more of her stuff in the near future, and you should, too. (later) i’ve managed to find much new music from cowboy bebop; almost two hours worth. it rocks. to mix it with barenaked ladies… you can be my yoko kanno!

Explosive Ordinance Device. Untitled.

Explosive Ordinance Device. Untitled.

this is a compilation of music that i’ve worked on with a few others. usually i don’t listen to stuff i wrote and recorded, but somehow on the drive to and from work it’s amusing. EOD is something that needs alot of work, but i can still hear all the potential there, and this collection doesn’t even have some of my favorites. i just wish i could sing better…

Dave Matthews Band. The Lillywhite Sessions.

i actually heard about this from (?) Newsweek magazine, and finally found the MP3s. the music is great, and i love hearing mr. matthews playing more acoustically. the drums are phenomonal, and i took listening with headphones to really appreciate them. favorite tracks include “grace is gone”, “busted stuff,” and “JTR.”

Echo and the Bunnymen. Ocean Rain.

classic music to listen to while in a particular mood. guitars, strings, bass, and great percussion all blend behind the haunting voice of ian mcculloch. i’ve listened to this album easily a couple hundred times and of those times maybe only 10 times in the daylight. it’s not that the music is exactly night music, but for best effect turn off the lights, light some candles and prepare to do nothing but be surrounded by the music.

Fatboy Slim. Norman Cook Collection.

a set of fat beats and good music. reminds me of my days in prague and i wish i had a date for alot of this. reminds me of the belgian DJs who would come to town to play mismas (“s” with the czech hachek sounding like a “sh”) or some of the clubs around namesti republiky.

Gorillaz. Gorillaz.

gorillaz has nice rhythm and guitars, with catchy vocals in many languages. good for parties, but for some reason not so good to drive with. maybe it’s just been my mood.

Fat Boy Slim. You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby.

what can i say. i’ve been wanting to pick it up for a long time, and finally did. doesn’t matter to me that a few of the songs were overplayed on the radio as at the time i wasn’t listening to the radio, so it’s all pretty fresh. excellent sampling, great beats, tricky arrangements. great electronic DJ soul food. check it out now.
