had a good time yesterday at andres’ birthday party. met his (large!) family and met some of his friends from calpoly. funny because i’d seen them so many times in pictures in his cube that it’s like i knew them. brent showed up with anne, and megan showed up with her friend elizabeth. spent most of my time with megan and elizabeth.
entries, by the way, have been spotty as the household i live in is going through changes.
found an interesting article on how they are hypothesising that a mutated gene led to the development of language (it allowed for greater vocalizations) and eventually culture, science, and all the rest. i’m wondering if we applied such a mutated gene to an animal that already has a great vocal range if it, too, would develop. like dolphins, or crows, or even dogs. would be an interesting experiment when they get to that point in bioengineering.
meanwhile GM has released a concept car that it’s showing at various car expos that runs on hydrogen and has one of the most scifi user interfaces i’ve ever seen in a civilian vehicle. well, if they can produce it for shows they can certainly start mass producing it. imagine how our relations in the middle east would be if we didn’t need their stinking oil? “you’re having problems? ah. sorry to heat that.” it would be great if everyone would call off their jihad because we’ve left saudi arabia and the middle east in general.
and finally, just because i’m annoyed with how this country thinks that limiting freedoms is a democracy, here’s this article pointing out that 2nd hand smoke is a myth. before you roll your eyes and moan about it, read the article or at least get informed from something besides the media and the modern prohibitionists. aside from the actual data quoted, one of my favorite lines is, “Wouldn’t the American way be to put a big sign on the front of your restaurant? ‘People Smoke In Here — Don’t Come In If It Bugs You.’ And then let everyone act like grownups?”
